4 ways to keep your cat's paws healthy

Healthy paws are incredibly important for your cat - not only will they need them for scratching and climbing, but it will also make their numerous aerial escapades easier if their paws are in tip-top condition. These four simple steps should ensure this is just the case.

1. Keep the pads clean

Not only can unhealthy substances potentially cause your cat pain, but they could easily end up licking the substance off when they groom themselves. Ensure that you don't inadvertently harm your cat by using harsh chemicals when cleaning your home.

2. Watch out for cuts

Check their pads regularly for signs of cuts, splinters or other indications of injury. Natural explorers, they can end up in all manner of places. If you find that your cat has a splinter, you should gently remove it with a pair of tweezers before attending to any cuts. If the wound shows any signs of infection, you should go to the vets.

3. Beware the sprouting toe hair

If you have a long-haired cat, they will often end up sprouting hair in-between their toes. If your cat is licking the area frantically, this is a sure sign that it is causing her irritation. If this occurs you can carefully trim the hair back with a small pair of scissors, while holding her steady to prevent sudden movement. Keeping the hair short is especially important during the winter months when snow or fragments of ice can get caught up in the hair.

4. Sensitive pads

The paw pads may be tough but they are still sensitive to temperatures. In hot and cold weather, the pads can dry up and even start to crack. To get around this you should try and keep your cat away from surfaces which are likely to be an extreme temperature, such as concrete paving. It can also be worth using a cat-friendly moisturiser on the paw - your vet should be able to recommend a specific one that will suit your cat.
