The importance of having a hobby

The importance of having a hobby

It's been found that Brits struggle to stick to a hobby for more than one year and two months

A poll of 5,001 UK adults found that almost half will take up a hobby, only to then give it up.

This was blamed on a combination of work commitments by 28 per cent, while 27 per cent said a busy family life stopped them from keeping it up.

However, this hasn't stopped them from trying new things - eight in ten currently have a hobby, dedicating a total of nine days over the course of a year.

The survey, commissioned by Barclaycard, revealed 57 per cent believe they're happier and a quarter have found new friends, thanks to their hobby.

Andrew Hogan, Head of Brand Strategy at Barclaycard, said: "Our research shows that in today’s often frantic world, having a hobby can have a huge, positive impact on both our personal and professional lives, as well as our overall health and wellbeing."

"That’s why it’s so important that we overcome obstacles to getting going, whatever that may be."

"We encourage everyone to prioritise their passions and start today."

For the majority, the big obstacle to pursuing our hobbies and interests was a lack of spare time, as a result of work commitments, family commitments and not having enough disposable cash.

On top of this, 13 per cent admit they're too lazy to spend additional time doing their hobbies, with 22 per cent revealing they procrastinate in their spare time.

Despite this, 54 per cent are more relaxed thanks to their passion, around a third believe they are healthier and 23 per cent saw their confidence levels increase.

And, amazingly, two in five believe their outside interests have been responsible for giving them a new outlook on life. On average, those who have made new outside interests felt the hobby gave them a more positive outlook.
