Humans of the Waterway: Susie and Maud

In the latest of the Humans of the Waterway, courtesy of the Canal & River Trust, we meet Susie and Maud, of the Kennet & Avon Canal

"I'm here on holiday. At work I’m a business psychologist so it's really interesting to experience the spirit of the canals. I'm interested in nature and the power of it, and my business psychology generally fits into that. It's very mindful here on the canal and yet it's also quite absorbing, so it takes your mind off anything else. It's also quite physical because of all the locks!

My husband picked our boat up in Bath and has cruised to Great Bedwyn with friends. He's been cruising for nine days and I only arrived yesterday to join him for the weekend. It's quite minimalist inside the hire boat, but it's really cosy sleeping on it.

I was a bit sceptical about hiring a canal boat because I'm a really keen sailor and I love being on a boat without an engine on the open sea - but it's really nice boating along the canals, it's really slow and meditative. I like how quiet it is here in November and I probably wouldn't like canals as much in the peak summer season when it's busier. It's also interesting to travel alongside people who live all year round on canal boats as a subculture away from mainstream life.

I'm just walking with Maud to the next lock and then we'll jump back on the boat I think."
