If you had to predict what the top cat or dog names were for 2017, what would you say?

If you thought 'Poppy' you'd be right, being the clear frontrunner for female cats for 2017. She knocked last year's favourite name, 'Luna', off the top spot. In second place was the long-standing popular name, 'Bella', which was closely followed by 'Molly', the survey conducted by Argos Pet Insurance found.

One determined female cat name that is clawing it's way back up the list is 'Daisy', which found itself in 10th place last year, but is now sitting pretty in fifth.

For handsome tomcats, 'Charlie' proved to be the most popular, replacing last year's favourite, Oliver. This was then followed up by 'Oscar'.

When it came to dogs, 'Poppy' was also the most popular female name, knocking last year's favourite, 'Bella', into second place. In third place was 'Molly', which climbed from sixth place last year.

With male dogs, the clear front-runner was 'Alfie', replacing the 2016 name 'Max' which was knocked to third place. Second place went to 'Charlie'.

A male dog name that was making a comeback was 'Milo', which has returned to the top 10 (in tenth spot), after being pushed down to 13th last year.

One very popular name ended up falling completely out of the top 10, with 'Lucy', which came second in 2016, being ousted from the list.
