Humans of the Waterway: Joe & Calico Jack

Humans of the Waterway: Joe & Calico Jack

Posted 13th Jan 2017

In the latest of our Humans of the Waterway features, courtesy of the Canal and River Trust, we meet Joe & Calico Jack

"Everyone's welcome to our mini canalside ceilidh dance! People have stopped to join in, dancing with their friends, children and other passers-by – It's what we call human scale fun and entertainment!

I'm Joe, otherwise known as Mr Medler. And these guys are called Calico Jack. Today we're running a space with lots of singing and dancing, getting everyone into a Christmas spirit with our ‘pop up’ micro-ceilidh on the towpath.

I've been calling ceilidhs for five or six years now. Bookings come for all sorts of events of all shapes and sizes, but I specialise in outdoor and unusual locations! I've always wanted to be involved with music and dance really. It’s a growing part of how I earn my living, but I do still have to do other part time work too. Under my hat as ‘Medler Productions’, I do music and social dancing for weddings, parties and private functions. I run all sorts of live events too with a list of performers ranging from musicians to professional storytellers. I'm also quite involved in swing dance and I teach that to groups and individuals.

We're having a lot of fun here today, and because we're all boaters, we're totally at home out here on the towpath!"
