In the latest of our Humans of the Waterway series, courtesy of the Canal & River Trust, we meet Ros, Tina & Alison at Devizes
"We've rented a canal boat together for this week. We’re a group of six ladies, and we three met when we were at University in Portsmouth, so we've known each other for the last 40-something years!
We stay in touch, and it doesn't seem to matter how long it's been since we've seen each other, there's an instant connection. I think it's because we know such a lot about each other.
The last time we met up was to go walking together in La Gomera, so this time we're having fun boating. Ros is a passionate canal boater, she's done a bit more than the rest of us. She did it as a child and a few years ago she went cruising around the canals with her husband for a few months.
Both Ros and Alison are very boaty and have just spent six weeks in the Greek Islands on a yacht together and are about to go again! Ros was even involved in Weymouth 2012 and her son Giles won an Olympic Gold Medal for sailing in the Finn class last year in Rio!
We're only two days into our holiday so far and we've already seen an amazing sunrise over the water! Not all of us can wake up that early, but Tina is a keen photographer so she knows sunrise and sunset are the best times for canal photos.
We’ve just stopped for a cuppa and a quick visit here to the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust Museum. Tonight we're looking forward to drinking something fizzy at the Bridge pub at Horton. Then the next stop will be Pewsey Wharf, where we're planning a circular walk from the canal up to the Giant's Grave, an ancient burial ground.
We’re having great fun, but between our start at Monkton Combe and here at Devizes, the highlight so far has got to be our teamwork taking the boat up the Caen Hill Lock Flight!"
