Did you know...the dormouse addition

Posted 12th Oct 2017

The Woodland Trust share three facts about the dormouse – did you know these?

Dormice are completely protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Damaging or destroying their habitat, along with disturbing, injuring or killing a dormouse can result in a six months prison sentence or a fine of £5,000.

Once a common sight throughout the UK, a combination of habitat loss, grey squirrels providing competition for food and climate change have seen the dormice populations dwindle to patches of South West England and South Wales.

Dormice are tiny, weighing around 20g. However, when it's time to hibernate, they will almost double their body weight.
