If you’re in search of some much needed shade, walking through woodlands is an escape from the sun as well as a magical setting, filled with inspiration
Begin by painting both parts of a small wooden embroidery hoop with dark green paint, leave to dry.
Download our ‘Fern hoop’ template here or send a stamped self-addressed envelope to ‘Fern hoop’ Template LLJUNE18, LandLove Magazine, HBMUK, The Tower, Phoenix Square, Colchester, Essex, CO4 9HU.
Print the template onto a sheet of A4 paper. Trace over the printed lines with a soft dark pencil. Turn the printout over and place it face down centrally on top of a piece of linen. Use the same pencil to rub over the back of the printed design several times; this will transfer the pencil lines onto the linen. Remove the paper template.
Transfer the linen to the painted embroidery hoop and tighten the ring, ensuring the linen is taut in the hoop.
Next, begin to embroider the fern following the pencil lines. We stitched the design with a simple straight stitch and used a slightly lighter shade of green for the tips of each frond.
