Today (22nd June) is Bring Your Dog to Work Day, with an estimated 2.5 million (eight per cent) bringing their canine companions into the office with them
Having a dog in your place of employment has been proven to have a significant benefit, lowering stress, increasing morale and boosting team co-operation.
However, it's also important to ensure our workplace is equally calming for our canine co-workers.
Kellie Ceccarelli, EUKANUBA's Veterinary Expert, said: "Loud sounds, changes to their usual routine and the introduction of new and unfamiliar objects or people can contribute to feelings of anxiety in dogs. With the rise in pet owners bringing their dogs to the office, it’s important that we take the necessary steps to ensure our canine companions enjoy a calm and relaxing workplace environment."
"The good news is stress levels in dogs have been shown to decrease significantly after listening to music, which helps to reduce heart rates and create an increased feeling of calm. That’s why, ahead of Bring Your Dog to Work Day, EUKANUBA has created the Top of the Pups Playlist, inspired by the musical preferences of our canine companions. We hope that this unique playlist will transform the office into a calm and welcoming environment for our four-legged friends."
Here are four tips that can help your dog stay happy and stress free throughout the day:
1 Create a safe haven
If your dog doesn't come into the office with you very often, it could be a daunting experience. Take familiar items with you - for instance, toys and bedding, as this lets them settle as quickly as possible.
2 Keep energy levels in check
A healthy diet is crucial to keeping your pet's energy levels in check during a busy working day.
3 Ensure your canine is well hydrated
It's important to stay hydrated in the workplace as hydration affects productivity, making you feel drained more quickly. The same applies to our canines - offices are usually warm and stuffy, particularly during the summer. Make sure you bring a bowl and top it up with a fresh supply of water so your dog can remain hydrated during the day.
4 Stick to a routine
Keep your dog relaxed by trying to mirror their normal day as far as you can. Keep their meal times the same and walk them at their usual times - it would be even better to take them for a walk during your lunch break, as this gives you a great reason to get away from your desk, clear your mind and get some exercise.
