Roasting chestnuts, open fires, carols and of course Father Christmas… join English Heritage as they travel back in time to Christmas past with these fantastic events

To get your festive season off to an authentic start, why not step into a back in time and experience a real Victorian Christmas at Audley End House and Gardens. Explore the holly and ivy in the courtyards and gardens, and experience the hustle and bustle as the house stokes the fires and dresses itself for Christmas – perhaps you might even catch a glimpse of Father Christmas himself!
More green fingered visitors can get their festive fix at one of English Heritage's Christmas wreath making masterclasses at Kenilworth Castle, Down House and Witley Court. Work alongside experts to create a traditional wreath from materials sourced from the gardens. Those looking for some culinary inspiration before the 25th can even pick up some tips and tricks from Mrs Beeton at Belsay Hall and Gardens.

If you can’t have a celebration without music and dancing, then head to Pendennis Castle in for traditional Cornish Christmas festivities featuring music and entertainment, plus fireside tales, mince pies and mulled wine. Or if Christmas isn’t Christmas without carols, experience carolling in the stunning and atmospheric Whitby Abbey, Goodrich Castle and Eltham Palace.

And, if you’re on the lookout for unusual Christmas gifts, why not visit the Medieval Christmas Market at Lincoln's Medieval Bishop’s Palace, for a yuletide shopping trip with a historic twist? Or for those who can’t bear to leave the warm cosiness of their sofa, visit the English Heritage online shop, where you can pick up great traditional gifts for loved ones, including home, food and garden gifts, or why not give the gift of membership?
