Every dog loves a tasty treat and nothing beats a home-baked biscuit by Laughing Dog. We find out more about this unique company
Based in the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside on the Grant family farm, Laughing Dog are on a mission to create recipes for our canine friends that meet all of their dietary needs to make them feel 100 per cent happy and healthy. Founded in 1936, Laughing Dog have been slowly oven-baking biscuits with wholesome ingredients ever since.
The Grant family have been farming their land in Lincolnshire for three generations. Ted Grant O.B.E. always had a passion for the land around him and an interest in providing for the local area. He started the dog food bakery to provide a way of adding value to the farms abundant produce and with the intention of giving back to the community. The company created jobs for local people, which was especially valuable to the area in the winter seasons when farming was quieter.
Today at the bakery, Ted's values have been passed on to the next generation and treating the land with respect is still of upmost importance to the company. Laughing Dog have their own solar farm to power as much electricity for the bakery as possible and the fields surrounding the bakery are planted with wild flower borders to encourage wildlife to flourish. The Laughing Dog team has expanded over the years and the bakery now employs over 140 local people help to farm the land, create the nutritious recipes and warm the ovens in the bakery to make fresh batches each day.
Bringing together the best ingredients sourced from the family farm where possible and a slow oven-baked cooking method, Laughing Dog make the crunchiest and most naturally nutritious dog foods and treats. The company pride themselves on being one of the only dog food makers to bake their entire range, which includes dry completes, mixer meals and treats, and each bag can be traced back to the baker who made it and the oven in which it was made.
But why are Laughing Dog so passionate about baking? Well, by cooking the food in a more gentle way compared to conventional methods of making dog food, it is kinder on digestion and means that all of the natural goodness and taste of the ingredients is retained. Additionally, baking creates a crisp and crunchy kibble which helps to slow down speedy eaters, clean teeth and makes for a more enjoyable texture.
Across the range you can find wheat-free and grain-free products which are perfect for all dogs including those with sensitive tummies or those that have specific intolerances. The wheat-free range is made from barley and oats, providing slower sources of energy release and the grain-free range includes potato and sweet potato, which are rich in natural anti-oxidants.
